Dr. Brent Shelley is a native of Indiana, but proudly makes his home in Las Cruces,
New Mexico with his wife and children.
Dr. Shelley is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he earned many
awards, but most proudly the Navy Achievement Medal. After his voluntary service
to his country, he attended Indiana University where he majored in Biology and
then attended the Indiana University School of Optometry where he excelled in
ocular disease. He served as Graduate Assistant instructor for three years in
Ocular Anatomy and Physiology under the supervision of Dr. Elaine Rivron. His
efforts culminated in his being the first graduate student to receive the Indiana
University Teaching Excellence Recognition Award
After graduation Dr. Shelley joined a multi-specialty ophthalmology practice where
we expanded his knowledge of eye disease and treatment, as well as managed the
practice's refractive surgery unit.
In 2003 Dr. and Mrs Shelley decided to return to her native Las Cruces. In August
2006 construction began for the forthcoming Shelley Eye Center, which opened on
January 2, 2007.
Offering glasses, contacts, laser refractive surgery and ocular disease treatment,
Dr. and Mrs. Shelley operate a progressive medical optometry practice using the
same cutting edge technology that he employed in his ophthalmology practice.
Dr. Shelley is honored to be entrusted with the visual health of the citizens of
southern New Mexico and practices by the motto "If I were on trial for being a good
optometrist, would there be enough evidence to convict me?"
Dr. Shelley is trustee for both the New Mexico Optometric Association and
Southwest Council of Optometry, and is a clinical skills examiner for the National
Board of Examiners in Optometry.
His hobbies include gardening, tinkering in his garage, flying airplanes, playing
softball, but most importantly spending as much free-time as possible with his son.
